When most people think of brain injury, they think of someone being hit in the head. While that may lead to a brain injury, there are many more types and causes. All brain injuries are considered to be "Acquired." However, there are multiple subcategories. The next breakdown includes Traumatic (TBI) or Non-Traumatic.
Traumatic brain injuries can be penetrative or non-penetrative. Penetrative means a foreign object enters the brain to cause damage, such a bullet. Non-penetrative involves the brain bouncing back and forth on the bony protrusions inside the skull. These are called Coup-Contrecoup injuries. These can lead to concussion and other damage. Causes in children are often falls, whiplash, child abuse, or Shaken Baby Syndrome.
If there is any suspicion of concussion or injury, seek medical attention. Concussion is not usually detected by imaging unless someone has sustained them previously. However, it is best to have medical documentation of the incident to support any future diagnoses or benefits. See our resources page to learn about signs and treatments of concussion.
Shaken Baby Syndome is often triggered by new parent/caregiver stress or depression brought on by the difficulties of raising a newborn. The vast majority of victims suffer life-long disabilities. If you are overwhelmed, please seek out counseling, ask someone to come help, or call a hotline. One severe reaction can cause a lifetime of damage for both of you. See our resource page to learn about ways to get help.
Non-traumatic brain injuries are caused by internal factors. These may include toxin exposure, viruses/infections, lack of oxygen, tumors, stroke, and more.
A large percentage of brain injuries show no physical signs, leading people to believe someone is making up their symptoms or are lazy. After a brain injury, a person's brain must re-wire itself to avoid the damage when running the body. This requires neurological messages to take the "long way" to their destination, causing the body extra mental and physical fatigue. All brain injuries are different. Be kind and support their needs.
